Answer the following questions either A or B. Pick the best fit i.e. the option that is true most frequently. 1. When I start a new job, I am concerned more with: A) Who I am working with B) Excelling at the tasks that form my job description 2. When I am asked to be part of a project team, I: A) Figure out my strengths and how I can contribute to the team effort B) Determine which part of the project I can take ownership of and deliver excellence on 3. My office or work space is: A) Always open and I welcome people to drop in or enter when I’m there or not B) If I have a door, it is closed for at least 25% of the day and I’d prefer people ask my permission before entering my work area 4. When credit is given for a project, I expect that I will: A) Be mentioned as part of the team on the project B) Receive top billing for my important contribution 5. I prefer performance incentives that: A) Measure my contribution to the overall goals of the company or organization B) Measure my performance on the tasks outlined in my job description 6. I’d prefer to be described as: A) Someone who seeks to discover the best in others B) Unique, an individual, a maverick or a super star 7. I feel most upset when: A) Someone I work with is forced to handle a large amount of work with few resources and I am unable to offer assistance B) My contribution is not recognized and I am lumped in with a group of under performers where I must compensate for the poor work of others 8. When in a problem solving meeting, I tend to: A) Listen to the views of others and assimilate them into my view of the situation and its solution B) Analyse the situation, see my role in correcting the problem and voice it 9. Most of the time, I pride myself on my: A) Cooperative nature B) Competitive spirit 11. When a change initiative is announced, I: A) Think about the good that will come from the change and see how the contributions of many will make this change happen B) Think about my role in the initiative and what it will mean to my duties and time 12. I seek to create outcomes that are: A) A win-win for everyone involved B) A win-win for me and my company’s bottom line Total up the number of times you chose answer B.If you chose B for 0-1 times: You pride yourself on your ability to think of others and not only yourself. You may do this however at the cost of your own individual success because you focus on pleasing people. You may be an under earner and not value your worth as highly as you should. If you chose B 2-4 times: You are happiest in a company or organization that has a mandate to serve a large community. Non-profit, environmental minded organizations or one of the caring professions (teaching, nursing, counselling etc.) are great fits. Alternatively, you would excel in roles that involve project work that heavily rely on your team work skills. If you chose B 5-7 times: You balance your team playing ability with your individual performance. In a corporate culture that equally values and rewards individual and team performance you fit right in. If you chose B 8-10 times: To be happy, you need to be in a company or organization that encourages competition and individual goal achievement. Sales or roles that involve hitting individual targets or a unionized environment are probably your best fit. If you chose B 11 or 12 times: You are highly competitive. Your success is paramount to anything else. You do not value the contribution of others and see it as a hindrance to your search for individual excellence. You are seen as a “my way or the highway” type and are often only happy in a leadership role. This level of independent thinking may cause you to be a star performer but at the cost of lack of respect from your coworkers who were stepped on while you were climbing to the top.
